My father (Robert "Mike" Mannion) was born in Mt. Carmel in 1917 and grew up there. While he is visually impaired and cannot appreciate this website, I have read everything to him and he can remember all of the sites that have pictures.

I grew up in Mount Carmel, class of 69. that was a great time to be a kid in town. Playing
basketball at the old Stevens school or wiffle ball at wink's corner. Your site is fun to
remember the good old days. I live in Saylorsburg Pa.now but still keep up with what's
going on by reading the Item at www.newsitem.com GO BIG RED! See you at Hershey.

My ancetors along with thousands of men and boys were coal miners. They worked long hours
in the darkness of the underground for low wages. Myself, as well as others wish to honor
them for the sacrifices they made. it is our hope that a postage stamp will be issued
recognizing the efforts of these men and boys. Therefore, we urge you to contact your
local, state and federal officals. Tell them about your father who used pick and shovel to
dig the coal, and then came home coughing and wheezing from the coal dust he inhaled that
day. Tell them about your grandfath r who as a small boy picked slate out of the coal as a
breaker boy. Let these political leaders know the stories of your loved ones and the
importance of seeing the stamp come into being. These individuals helped shape America for
what it is today. This postage stamp needs to be approved and issued so that their
endeavors will not be forgotten

My parents, John & Phoebe(Thompson)Zelez moved from Mt. Carmel to Bensalem, Pa. in
1955. My Dad was a coal miner. My Mom had worked in ?Pachuda's? drug store. We visited our
Mt. Carmel relatives frequently. I love my memories of Knoebels Grove as a chi d AND as a
parent! Putting your children into their grandparents arms to ride the carousel together
was awesome!!! When I'm at the park now I can still see us running to find our parents to
plead for more money for rides. I hope it always remains a "fa ily" place.

Looking for geneaolgy information on surname of Morgan. Uncle Milt (Milton) Morgan lived
on North Hickory Street in Mount Carmel for many years. He was one of five children (Emma,
Annie, Ray, Milton and Wilford ... my father) born to Ananias and Fannie Morgan in
Trevorton, PA. Emma married John Partridge and Annie married B. Frank Derk. Ananias is my
genealogy "brick wall"! He was born in 1859 and was killed in a mine accident in
the North Franklin Colliery, Trevorton, PA in 1902. I have not been able to find the name
of his parents. If anybody has information about the family, or anyone I could contact to
get additional information about the elusive Grandpa Ananias, please contact me. Thank

Looking for any Halkowicz, Halko, Halcovich/Halkovich. I am doing research on these names
and any variations. Halkowicz is the original spelling. They are Rusyns from present day
southeast Poland. Known villages these folks came from are: Binczarowa, and Bogusa.
Families I know of: Nikolaj and Pearl, settled in Atlas, PA sometime around 1888. Children
were: Mary, Anna, Olga, Mike, George, Walter, Victoria, Catherine, Johanna (living), and
John (living). Michael and Lucia Halkowicz, settled in Atlas, PA 1890s (Michael Supposedly
arrived June 23rd, 1887) and had: Mary, Julia, Tom, Alex, John, Anna (living), Pearl,
Walter (living). Neftodi and Anastasia Halkowicz settled in Atlas, PA. (Neftodi is
believed to be half brother to Micheal). Anastasia died 1918, and he remarried Tekla
Howenec. Later he moved to Brady, PA. His children with Anastasia were: Jake, Stefan, Eva,
Metro, and Ann (Rovito). Neftodi had other brothers: Theodore (wife was also a Tekla
Shilosh), who lived in Mt Carmel area, and supposedly 3 others, John? Sam?, Daniel? who
moved to Passaic, NJ. Other Halkowicz in NJ (Middlesex) were John and Peter. There are a
bunch of other Halcovich in Central City, and they are supposed to be somehow related to
Neftodi. Would like to hear from folks in Central City. Jacob and Fotia (Sofia) Halkovich,
lived in St. Clair, PA. They had 2 children who died young, one was Anna, and the other
was John? another known child was Mary (Krill). WOuld like to hear from decendents of
Mary. George (Gregori) and Barbara Halcovich of Pottsville, Pa. (Name is now Halvovage,
some are still living there. Gregori left for Manville, NJ 1920s? Finally, there was an
Alexander and an Arafat living in Excelsior area in 1900 census. Do not know what happened
to them. If your name is Halk, Halkowicz, Halcovich, Halkowich, etc, please let tell us
your family history. I am attempting to trace all of these line from Poland to US.

Good morning. I am the publisher of Mt. Carmel Township author Geraldine Glodek's novel,

excellent reviews from The "Midwest Book Review," "Polish American

been sold from Maine to California and oveseas. It is sold by bookstores, mining and
railroad museums, and online bookstores. I'm writing to let her hometown people know that
Geraldine Glodek is now on a book-signing tour in Pennsylvania and New Jersey. Information

In tracing my grandfather's roots in Mt. Carmel, I was given much help by the good folks
at Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Catholic Church. However, it was there that I hit a brick wall.
I found that there was no cemetery and death records were kept before 1945 at the church.
Can you suggest how I could go about a cemetery search for Martin Keating and Julia
Brennan Keating? Family memory thinks he died in the flu epidemic of 1889 and we know
nothing of Julia. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Th nk you, Charlie

town. Even now when I visit my parents and read the local paper(Sound off) or talk to the

visit I feel like I am part of the twilight zone and in a time warp. If I could use one
word to describe it...would be grey. My children even say it feels as though there is a
grey cloud hanging over this town. I think eatting all those perogies has turne your minds

Great site. My mother was born there in 1936, her mother in 1914. As a Chicagoan, I really
enjoy visiting the town annually and its down-to-earth citizenry. My fondest experience
took place during Christmas 1996 when I strolled into Schu's (I believe) m n's store. The
proprietors offered this stranger good cheer, food and drink. Just tremendous. I think if
you're a native to Mt. Carmel, you may take for granted the close-knit community
atmosphere. My uncle Albert Visintainer owns the motel on 4th and aple.

I was looking at the state elction news and came on to the mayors web site. You have made
a really nice web page for the town. I lived in Mt.Carmel for two years (1993-1995) on
West Second Street. My dad was the pastor of the Mt. Carmel First Church of God. I
graduated from Purchase Line High School in 1998 and now attend Liberty University in
Lynchburg, Virginia.

I believe I just wrote to the mayor when I meant to sign the guest book. Sorry, there,
Mayor. Oh, well, at least it wasn't a complaint. I was trying to say that the Mt.Carmel
web page will be a link in my web page, which features excerpts from Nine Bells at the
Breaker: An Immigrant's Story. This novel is set in a fictional coal patch outside of Mt.
Carmel. The web address is: http://www.ia.net/~gerryg I borrowed a few street names from
Atlas, and invented The James Buchanan School. The Wilson School, which was there when I
was a kid, had not yet been built in the time of this novel. Thanks for a way to visit
home I can afford! Geraldine Glodek

"submarine sandwiches" outside every Saturday.....The old State Theater, the
Hollywo d and the Vic? I'm in the Phila. area and see Buthcy Franks, Ron Pizzoli, Glen

Great work, Jeff! I loved the touch with the Alma Mater! It's great to stop in every once
in awhile and be hit with so many great memories of where I grew up. Immediately upon
seeing the pictures, like Oak St. and the Anthracite field (on the K of C si e), it feels
like I never left. I only lived in Mt. Carmel from 1969 (age 5) until 1982, when I went to
college...but obviously they were the most important 14 years of my life! They helped make
me who I like to think I am today, one who's honest, carin and proud! And while I have
already spent most of my life living in other places, no matter where I go or how
difficult it can sometimes be to explain to others exactly where I am from...it will
always be MT. CARMEL! To anyone who knows me from MCA...hello! Feel free to e-mail me
sometime! I'd love it! So long and God bless! John T. Nicodem, Jr. MCAHS Class of 1982

I spent the first four years of my life in Mount Carmel and visited it frequently when I
was young. My fondest memories are of huckleberries, milk and sugar for breakfast (after
picking them ourselves). I never dreamed that I would one day be able to vis t there from
my current home in Eldersburg, Maryland. I am researching my family names, Furlani and
Bianchi, my roots in Mount Carmel. Some other names of interest are Bailoni, Bridi,
Chetti, Ficca, Pieri, and Concini. The spellings may be off. I would be interested in
hearing from anyone with information they would like to share.
