Mayor J. Kevin Jones

Dear Friends and Neighbors,

Thank you for allowing me to serve a fourth term as your mayor. I have always appreciated your strong support.

Here's what's happening in the borough:

- The 13th Annual "Mayor's Walking Tour" of the borough took place in June.  Over 100 properties had varying code violations.  This list was turned over to the Code Enforcement Officer for further action.

- The Oak Street Banner Project, started by the Mount Carmel Lions Club, will be taken to a new level with additional banners in the future.

- The Mount Carmel Police Department's Community Watch Program meets the 1st Tuesday of every month at 6:30 PM in Council Chambers.  As Mayor, I invite you to get involved.

- The Shamokin Creek Project is in the last phase prior to construction. Permits from the state are expected soon.  Several legal roadblocks have slowed progress.

- The Mount Carmel Historical Commission is still looking for a business district property to use for displaying area pictures and memorabilia.

- In 2012, Mount Carmel Borough will celebrate it's sesquicentennial (150th anniversary). We are very proud to announce that the Firemen's Six County Convention and Parade will be held in Mount Carmel during the Sesquicentennial Festivities. Contact my office if you're interested in participating.  Sesquicentennial meetings are held on the 3rd Wednesday of the month at 7:30 PM in the Mount Carmel Elks.  The group is currently selling nostalgic T-Shirts for $12.00.  They can be purchased at the Academy Sports Center and at the Saturday Farmers' Market in Mount Carmel .  Proceeds will benefit 2012 events.

- Borough Council Meetings will be held at 7:30 PM on the following dates in 2010: Jan. 21, Feb. 18, March 18, April 15, May 20, June 17, July 15, August 19, Sept.16, Oct. 21, Nov. 18, and Dec. 16.  A workshop will be held at 7:30 PM on all Mondays before the Thursday meeting.

- A reminder to drivers in the borough that stop signs mean  STOP!  I have asked Chief Shurock and his patrolmen to monitor our intersections with increased vigilance.
